The meek inherit the land (2)

Blessedness

Simply put, blessedness is wellbeing of the soul; ‘happiness’ captures something of the meaning, but it’s much more than what we’d ordinarily understand that word to mean.  Your soul was designed to experience blessedness and it longs for it!

Humility, mourning and meekness may be far-removed from the world’s idea of happiness, but the Lord’s teaching is that blessedness is closely connected to such things.

Blessedness, though, is not only the product of this exercise of heart and mind.  There is promise in each of the beatitudes and the promises, too, are a source of blessedness.  In our key verse (Matt. 5:5), the inheritance of the earth (or the land) is promised.  There’s a future, millennial application here, but I think we can apply the promise presently too.  The promise in verse 5 seems to draw upon Psalm 37:

“But the humble will inherit the land,
And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.” (Ps. 37:11)

Inheriting the land

Inheriting the land… abundant prosperity…  Doesn’t it take us back to God’s promise to Abraham?

“I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.” (Ex 32:13)

That land flowed with milk and honey – abundant physical provision.  More than that, though, the land possessed the mountain of God (see Isaiah 57:13).  When Paul looks back on all that Israel enjoyed in that land, he imagines “the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises” (Romans 9:4).  Abundant prosperity indeed!

But for disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ today, there’s the promise of an even better inheritance – something that we may possess by allocation from God, by divine election.

In the Old Testament, the land is representative of the kingdom of God, the jurisdiction of the rule of God among His people.  In the New Testament, the ‘land’ is a spiritual one; the principles of God’s kingdom, taught by the Lord and passed on through the apostles’ teaching, were seen in operation in interdependent local churches of God, which together comprised the Fellowship of the Son of God.

Just as of old, this spiritual ‘land’ possesses the mountain of God.  The way into God’s presence has been opened up by a great Priest, who has secured access for a nation (the people of God)  into the very presence-chamber of God and who leads their worship song.  Abundant prosperity, exceeding Israel’s by far!

That land is the place where blessedness is promised.  Why?  Because within its boundaries can be found the gateway of heaven, the place where God dwells among a people which, out of all the nations of the earth, He chooses to call His very own.  Do you know that blessedness in your own life?  Do you want to find it?  Seek first the kingdom of God and settle down in that land of God’s rest among the people of His choice.

Of course, meekness – submission to His will and subjection to His Word – will be required both to enter into that land (to take up your inheritance) and to continue in it. Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the land!
